There were several strong earthquakes in Herat, Afghanistan, causing significant damage. Over 30 people have lost their lives, and more than 600 are injured. The quakes, the largest being a 6.3 magnitude, destroyed twelve villages in Zinda Jan and Ghoryan districts, according to local officials.
Death recorded due to Earthquake
The Ministry of Disaster Management reported 15 deaths and 40 injuries in the Zinda Jan district alone. Some houses in Farah and Badghis provinces were also damaged. The US Geological Survey stated that six earthquakes hit western Afghanistan, with the most powerful one having a magnitude of 6.3. The tremors were felt in nearby provinces too.
Afghanistan often experiences earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates meet. A significant earthquake in June 2022 in eastern Afghanistan caused extensive casualties and injuries.
