In Mahindra’s annual event in 2023, they introduced a significant vehicle for South Africa on August 15th – the Thar.e concept. This vehicle is unique as it’s a five-door model based on Mahindra’s electric platform called the EV Inglo skateboard. It’s the second model from Mahindra’s legacy brand to go electric.
Let’s talk about its exterior.
The Thar.e showcases a modern interpretation of the classic Thar design. It has eye-catching features like a three-slat grille, squircle-shaped headlights and taillights, sturdy wheels, and interchangeable bumpers. What’s interesting is that nearly all parts of the car can be swapped out, and Mahindra is emphasizing the use of recycled and sustainable materials.

They’ve added stylish elements like front and rear orange tow hooks, slim side mirrors, and wide wheel arches to give it that rugged SUV look. Importantly, it’s afive-door vehicle, suggesting that the production version will be available in both three-door and five-door configurations. Expect various options like hardtops, soft-tops, hybrid roofs, and even stripped-down version for serious off-roading.
Now, moving to the interior.
The Thar.e’s cabin, shown in design sketches, adopts a modular layout with a modern take on the current Thar’s blocky design. There are dual digital displays and steering-mounted controls. Mahindra plans to make the cabin components removable and easy to clean with a hose.

Mahindra powertrain details
Mahindra hasn’t disclosed the exact powertrain details, but it’s likely to share technology with other Mahindra EVs. It’s expected to have all-wheel drive (AWD) thanks to individual motors on both axles. Like many electric vehicles, there will probably be different battery options offering varying ranges.
Given its Thar heritage, there might be a version with a smaller battery pack but geared towards AWD performance, low-speed driving, and off-road capabilities, including higher ground clearance, wider tires, and an electronic differential.
Regarding launch and pricing
There’s no official release date, but we anticipate the Thar.e to be available around 2026. In terms of cost, the base rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model could start at around Rs. 20 lakh, while the top-tier five-door AWD variant might approach the Rs. 25 lakh mark.
